This ‘brownie in a jar’ recipe is great fun to construct and makes a brilliant homemade gift for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or a birthday. Your friend then mixes the contents of the jar with some eggs and melted butter to create a tray of delicious brownies.
The ingredients below are the right quantities to fill a 1 litre jar. We found these pretty jars with a heart on the front from an Ebay shop, but any 1 litre jar would work well.
You will need:
- 1 litre glass jar
- Paper or card rolled into a funnel
Ingredients to go into the jar (fill in this order):
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 95g plain flour
- 35g cocoa
- 75g plain flour
- 135g brown sugar
- 150g white sugar
- 100g milk chocolate chips
- 100g white chocolate chips
Add the ingredients carefully into the jar in the order listed above (starting with the salt, then the baking powder, then the plain flour etc) to create coloured layers in the jar. We found it best to roll a piece of paper into a funnel and hold it so that the exit of the funnel was just above the last layer of ingredients. Then tip the new layer of ingredients carefully into the funnel. This way, the flour did not waft too much and mix with other layers as it dropped into the jar. After a layer has been added press down gently before adding the next layer.
Write a tag to go with the brownie mix. We wrote “Combine the contents of the jar with 150g melted butter and 3 beaten eggs. Bake in a 9 x 9 inch tin at 170C for 25-35 minutes”.
